23rd Plus Budapest International Marathon

A fantastic, real running time welcomed the runners of the 23rd Plus Budapest International Marathon. More than 3000 marathon runners began the race at 10 o'clock in the morning. Over 500 runners joined them at the 12th kilometre to finish the course with the marathoners and run a 30 km distance. The 42 kilometres could be divided between 3 or 5 runners and thus about 500 teams of runners ran together with the marathon runners. Overall 12 900 runners took part on the running day, out of them more than 2000 runners came from abroad, from 50 different countries.

The atmosphere of the race made the day unforgettable for all runners!

The next Budapest International Marathon called the 24th Spar Budapest International Marathon will be organised on 4 October 2009! Come and join us, see this race for yourself!

Start Number

We kindly ask all runners of the 23rd Plus Budapest International Marathon for their own safety to fill in their personal and health data on the back of the start number.

Time Limit

01. oktĂłber

The time limit on the race is 5 hours 30 minutes (gross 5 hours 38 minutes). Part time limits: 45 minutes at 6 km, 1:30:00 at 12 km, 2:15:00 at 18 km, 3:02:00 at 24 km, 3:51:00 at 30 km, 4:40:00 at 36 km. The race will be followed by a closing bus going at 7 minutes 30 seconds / km in the first part of the race and 8 minutes 10 seconds / km in the second part of the race. Those who are caught up by the closing bus should get up on it, return their chip on the bus and get their deposit fee on the bus as well.

The keeping to the time limit will also be controlled at the refreshment stations, runners exceeding the limit will not be allowed to continue the race!

Pasta Party

Since 1984 Plus Budapest International Marathon has been organising a pasta party. This is a good opportunity to get together, talk about the race and get prepared both mentally and physically.

At the Pasta Party you will have the opportunity to meet and talk to the Asics pacemeakers.

The party will be organised on 4th October on 56-osok Tér (near Heroes Square). Marathon and 30 km runners will receive a free ticket upon picking up their start numbers. Tickets for friends, relatives are available at 700 HUF (3€).

Expected Number of Runners

Based upon previous registrations we expect about 3000 runners on the marathon distance, a further 500 runners on the 30 km distance and 500 relay teams.

There are now only 2 weeks before the race! The 23rd Plus Budapest International Marathon will be organised on 5 October 2008. There are already more than 1300 foreign runners on the marathon distance and more than 100 foreign runners on the 30 km distance. The majority of the runners will come from France, Great Britain, Germany and Italy.

On 4th October there will be a chance to meet other marathon runners and have a last joint training before the race.

Getting there: The Athletic Centre is situated close to Margaret Bridge. Take tram 4 or 6 until the middle of the bridge and walk on the island from there, the race centre will be on your left.

Race Report

The largest half marathon of Central Europe was now organised for the 23rd time in Budapest. Overall almost 7000 runners took part on the event. Besides the 21 095 meter long half marathon distance, the runners could also choose to run the race in a team of 2 runners and there was also a fun run of 3,5 km organised for children and family members. This year the organisers designated a new course leading along the river Danube and in the city center showing the most important sights of Budapest with places that are part of the World Heritage.

The organisers put emphasis on this race on amateur runners, thus no professional runners were invited. The race was won with a moderate winning time of 1:07:22.

Among the runners there were more than 1000 runners from abroad. The majority came from the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Denmark and the USA. There were runners even from such far away countries like New Zealand, Israel and Mexico.

The next Budapest International Half Marathon will be organised on 6 September 2009!

Andrássy Street

Even though Andrássy Street, which has been part of the World Heritage since 2002, is divided into three parts, it still shows a unique architectural unit. The reason for this is that it was built in less than a decade. One of the most valuable buildings on Andrassy Street is the Palace of the Hungarian National Opera. Along the street you can also find the old Music Academy, the old Art Gallery and the building of the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts.

This street also has a treasure that is not visible on the surface: the millennium underground. It also stops at Hero's Square where Andrassy Street ends.

A fantastic race in the history of the Plus Budapest International Marathons!

More than 3000 individual runners registered to the Plus Budapest International Marathon and almost half of them were foreigners! There were more than 500 runners joining the marathon runners at the 12,195th kilometre of the race, running the 30 km distance. Overall, on all the different distances (7 individual and 2 relays) organised, there were 13 600 runners on the streets of Budapest.

The 42 kilometres passed by the most beautiful parts of Budapest, among them the Andrassy Street and the Buda Castle which are parts of the World Heritage. There were 35 music stations along the course and refreshment stations at every 4ht kilometre.

Most foreign runners came from France and Finland, followed by runners from the UK, Germany, Italy and the USA.

Next year the 23rd Plus Budapest Marathon will be held on 5 October 2008!

So far there are more than 1200 foreign individual marathon runners on the 22nd PLUS Budapest International Marathon! They will be joining a crowd of almost 1500 individual Hungarian runners whose number is still expected to rise until the end of the week. On the different distances overall more than 15 000 runners will occupy the streets of Budapest on 30 September on Hungary's largest marathon!

The Buda Castle Cave Hospital is now open to visitors

Rare natural phenomena and historical memories await the visitors in the rooms of the Secret Military Hospital and the air-raid shelter. The location of the caves - under the Buda Castle Hill - is unique in the world. The largest wax museum of Hungary welcomes tourists with a historical exhibition titled "From the Prehistoric Times to the Cold War".

The Buda Castle Cave Hospital was built towards the end of 1943; it was intended as an emergency surgery hospital capable of treating up to 200 patients at a time. The other parts of the cave system provided shelter for 4-6 thousand people in World War II. The area was classified as a secret object, under the Russian leadership it was going to be made into a nuclear air-raid shelter. The large exhibition - on over 2000 sq metres - is an adventurous journey into the past of the Buda Castle Hill, visitors discover the nowadays fortunately unknown world of war doctoring and military air raid shelters. History is brought to life by over 80 large, lifelike wax figures made by the latest wax working technology in the rooms of the Buda Caves and the former Hospital untouched since the 1960's.

Sziget Festival

The Sziget Festival celebrates its 15th anniversary with the widest musical choice and with an LGT concert on day zero. Besides the music on one of Europe's most popular pop music festivals there will of course be other programmes. Theatre, dance, classical music, cabaret, performance, film presentations, fine arts, handicraft, literary presentations, children, sport and free time programmes, that is everything which makes the Sziget unique even on an international level. Parliament

In 1902, after a mere 17 years of construction, Hungary presented itself with what was then the largest parliament building in the world. An architectural echo of the Houses of Parliament of London, this neo-Gothic edifice expressed the country's robust self-confidence at the beginning of the 20th century. In front of the Parliament there are several monuments to the nation's lost struggles: the wars for independence in 1703, 1848 and again in 1956. The Parliament also contains the crown jewels of Hungary - the Holy Crown and the Coronation Insignia, which were worn by Hungarian kings since the Middle Ages. At the end of WWII, these regalia were spirited out of the country and ended up in the United States, not to be returned until 1978.

Should you come to our race, you will be able to observe this gorgeus building from all sides; your will run exactly beside the Parliament but will also see it from the other side of the Danube. Don't miss this opportunity!

Kékes Peak Race

This year we organise the yubilee Kekes Peak Race on 16th June for the 10th time. The race is 11,6 km with 671 meters difference in level. At the end of the not everyday achievement finishers can touch the stone representing the highest peak of Hungary at 1014 meters. The course is leading upwards except for less than 200 meters; the last 3 kilometres are expressly difficult. The big summer heat, the almost 28 degrees did not make the task of the runners easier. This year a record number ... runners registered to this race!

Did you know that the trams in Budapest are yellow? The fans of Budapest public transport take it as a fact that the trams in Budapest are yellow, or rather yellow at the bottom, white at the top with a brown stripe separating these. BudaFest Summer Music Festival (4 July - 19 August)

This year this grand series of events is organised for the 16th occasion with 25 colourful programmes during July and August. The festival binding together the high-niveau cultural programmes in the Hungarian State Opera, in the Buda Castle and on the Saint Stephan Square has become one of the most renown summer cultural series of events in Europe. One of the scenes of the event, the Hungarian State Opera situated on Andrassy Street, can be seen from close up during running if you come and join us on our race! Regsitration.

Andrássy Street

Even though Andrássy Street that has been part of the World Heritage since 2002, is divided into three parts, it still shows a unique architectural unit. The reason for this is that it was built in less than a decade. One of the most valuable buildings of Andrassy Street is the Palace of the Hungarian National Opera. Along the street you can also find the old Music Academy, the old Art Gallery and the building of the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts.

The street also has a treasure that is not visible on the surface: the millennium underground. It also stops at Hero's Square where Andrassy Street ends.

Equestrian June Festival

This year the Equestrian June Festival, Festival of the Light of Budapest and Jurta Festival will be organised in Budapest for the 8th time. During the 3-day-long festival those interested can get acquainted with the ancient Hungarian culture, presentations of craftsmen, jurta camps, fire-riders show, equestrian competitions, Hungarian national folklore concerts and ancient Hungarian food.

If you register either to the marathon or the half marathon then your registration fee contains an entry ticket to the Szechenyi Bath. Budapest got the name of City of Spas in the 1930s as the capital owing the most healing thermal springs in the world. Budapest hosts a number of running events in the running season from the spring until the autumn. Our first running event was the city protecting Vivicitta, which we call this way because our objective is to show beautiful historic buildings and parts of the city, which we should protect. This year the race organised on 22 April on the day of the Earth was completed with a participation record, all together there were 10.600 runners of one of the running distances (12,5 km, 6,5 km 3,5 km) and on the walking distance.

This year on 18 June the Bridge Festival will be organised for the eighth time on the Chain Bridge, in the Tunnel, on the Clark Adam Square and on the Roosevelt Square. The bridge celebrating its 134th birthday this year is one of the most splendid constructions of Europe. The bridge's anniversary is celebrated once a year and the residents of the city are entertained on different cultural programmes. The Chain Bridge is one of the most beautiful symbols of Budapest, which not only connects Pest with Buda but also the past with the present. Buda Castle
After the Mongol invasion in Hungary IV Bela king decided to build a castle, which withstands the barbaric attacks. By the end of the 12th century the surroundings of the castle became an important settlement. For decades it served as temporary quarters of Hungarian kings. In the XIV century the castle was occupied by the Ottomans and was reconquerred only in the XVII century. The most beautiful parts of the Castle are the King's Palace, the Fishermen's Bastion and the Mathias Church. You can see them when you run cross the Chain Bridge or when you run along the bank of the Danube on the Pest side!

A postponed marathon with great mood
Hungarian winner on the Budapest Marathon - Tamas Toth and Judit Foldigne Nagy are the best

Originally the 21st PLUS Budapest Marathon was planned for 1st October - finally the political event, demonstrations in Budapest caused the putting of the race off for 15th October. This change in the date didn't influence the atmosphere of runners and supporters. A marathon for individual runners and relay teams, a 30 km, a minimarathon, a fun run and a family run - all these races were held on the same day - there were 11 500 participants on the event.

A great, sunny weather, a real indian summer, great for running, welcomed the runners in Sunday morning in the City Park. The first start was at 9.40 when young and beginner runners complete a 3.5K distance in the park. The main attraction of the day came then: the marathon starters collected in the start zone and they were waiting the sound of the boom of cannon. The field was reached as far as more hundred meters. The most excited people were the runners who have run the first marathon in their life - we counted more then 100 of them.

However most of foreign runners could not start the race because of the postponing, more then 300 participants from 31 foreign countries could start on the race. Most foreigners came from Finland, England, Italy and France, but there were representatives from USA and Japan.

More then 1700 individual runners start on the 42 km distance and another 1700 runners complete the 42 km in a 3 or 5-member relay team. It was the first time when runners can start on a 30 km distance from the point of the 12 195 m of the marathon. Participants could start according their running speed, so they could join the marathon runners with the same rate.

The companions weren't bored because either, they could enjoy the family day that was held on the Felvonulási Square from the morning.

A runner words: "I want to congratulate you and your team on the magnificent well organized race event. For me it was the first marathon and I will remember it in my heart. The city is as beautiful as the people itself. It's a lovely city with lot of history. I know for sure that I will visit the city again so I can see more of it. Many thanks from me to all of you that made the event possible and see you next time...

Plus Budapest Marathon is adjourned - the safety of the runners is the most important
Because of the unfortunate events in Budapest and the suggestion of authorities the organisers decided to adjourn the marathon race that was planned originally for 1st October 2006. The new scheduled date is 15th October 2006. After negotiations with the authorities the decision is expected in the second part of this week.

Arpad Kocsis, the race organiser of the Budapest Marathon: "We are really disappointed that the biggest sport event in Hungary had to be adjourned. But the president of the state and other honours suggested to postpone the race and the competent persons of the Hungarian police couldn't guarantee the safety of the runners' and the spectators', so we had to pass this decision. The anxiety for runners and visitors of the event (about 200 000 people) is in the first place at this moment. Of course I understand the disappointment of the runners who have trained hardly for the marathon and looked forward to the race. Organisers who were working for months to prepare the event are disappointed as well. This is why we are making efforts to hold the race on 15th October so the tradition of this 20 years old event hasn't be broken off.

Péter Eszényi, the managing director of Plus Hungary added: "We support the decisions of the Organisers. The security of the participants is the most important thing. We are still committed as main sponsor to the Plus Budapest International Marathon, because this race is one of the most outstanding sport event in Hungary. We would be really glad if we can organise it on another date.

Because of the unfortunate events in Budapest over the past several days, (street demonstrations and riots,) police are unable to provide and guarantee the security of the Budapest marathon and its participants on the day of the elections.
After holding negotiations with municipal authorities and the police, we have been forced to reschedule the event and we will not be able to organise it on 1st October.
We are currently holding talks with authorities about holding the event probably on October 15, a date that is also supported by the city's management committee. A final decision on the new date will be made on September 27. We will provide you with further information as soon as it becomes available. We regret this inconvenience.

Entry fee is 65 €/person if you pay it before that date. We accept registratoins at the spot (on 30th September and 1st October) for 75 €/person.

Almost 200 British runners have registered for this year marathon. British have surpassed themselves. They were the second largest nation among the participants behind Hungarian runners last year. This is the same now. Germans are at the third place, same as last year.
